As we approach the end of 2024, we are taking a moment to reflect on some of the key highlights from this year. Before wrapping up POLARIN activities for the year, we’re pleased to share these milestones with you.

1st POLARIN Transnational Access Call
The 1st POLARIN Call for Transnational Access proposals was open from 1st of October to 28th November, 2024. We had a record number of participants in the introductory webinar and close to 100 proposals were received.
|
|
|
We are grateful for a tremendous response to 1st POLARIN Transnational Access Call. The scientific evaluation is in progress and the results of this call will be available in April 2025.
|
This call was made possible by a series of prior achievements including:
|
- Development of the POLARIN TAP, the portal for submission of proposals to POLARIN
- Implementation of the Scientific Liaison Panel, a panel with 21 experts from all disciplines in polar sciences
- Call documentation and guidelines
- Webinar for applicants, to ensure a smooth application process.

POLARIN Activities in 2024
Conferences
Since its launch on 1st March 2024, POLARIN has been introduced and showcased at several key polar science events in different regions of the world.
|
- Arctic Science Summit Week (21-29 March 2024): POLARIN was introduced at the Arctic Science Summit Week in Edinburgh, Scotland.
- Netherlands Polar Day (April 2024): POLARIN was represented at the NL Polar Day in The Hague. It was co- organized by the Netherlands Polar Programme (NWO), the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS NL) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Arctic Circle Forum, Berlin (May 2024): POLARIN was presented during a session on European Polar Research Priorities.
- SCAR Open Science Conference, Pucón, Chile (19–23 August 2024): A dedicated workshop session provided an opportunity to introduce the POLARIN project to the polar research community.
- EU Polar Science Week, Copenhagen (3–6 September 2024): POLARIN was highlighted during the session "Beyond Borders: Strengthening Global Polar Research through Advanced Research Infrastructures," presenting its aims and potential contributions.
- Arctic Circle Assembly, Reykjavik (17–19 October 2024): POLARIN joined the EU Polar Cluster Booth and participated in the session "Tara Polar Station: Identifying Central Arctic Changes Through Transpolar Drifts,".
- Arctic Net’s Arctic Change, Ottawa, Canada (9-12 December 2024): POLARIN was represented at The AC2024 which brought together researchers from the natural, health, and social sciences to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing Arctic region.
- Arctic Partnership Week, Busan, South Korea (10-12 December 2024): “EU POLARIN: Gateway to Polar Research Infrastructures” was presented in the observer seminar as a part of Sustainable Day sessions.
In addition, POLARIN was also represented at the general assemblies of several EU Polar Cluster projects.

These events served as important platforms for raising awareness of POLARIN and engaging with the wider polar research community.

What to expect next year?
Here’s a sneak peek of what’s on the horizon for POLARIN in 2025.

Launching in 2025:
- POLARIN Training for Research Infrastructure Users: POLARIN will develop training programmes and resources for research infrastructure (RI) users to ensure optimal usage of services offered by POLARIN.
- POLARIN Data Portal and virtual access to data
- The 2nd POLARIN Transnational Access Call is planned to be launched in September, 2025.
POLARIN presence is confirmed at:
- EGU General Assembly 2025, Vienna, Austria (27th April - 2nd May 2025) with an information booth (#41) in the Exhibition Area.
- One Ocean Science Congress, Nice, France (3rd - 6th June 2025).
