Facilities

AWI curates and archives sediment cores which were taken by POLARSTERN from both polar oceans since 1983. The collection comprises more than 4000 cores from gravity, piston, kastenlot and giant box corers with a total length of more than 12000 m as well as samples from multi corers. AWI has a spacious sediment laboratory that
includes a 6-meter-long centre table and equipment for sediment sample processing, such as a freeze dryer, drying ovens, centrifuge, ultrasonic bath, and precision  balance. Geological laboratories to perform multi-proxy sedimentological and geochemical analyses of soft sediment cores are available.

Services offered

The users will be supported by experienced technicians or staff scientists who are trained in taking samples for a variety of analyses.

Unit of access:

Sampling day

What is included in the Access

The costs of the technicians or engineers to prepare, sample and send the samples are included. Material costs for sampling and packaging material for sending are included as well. The typical duration of work is 1 to 3 days. Integration into the scheduling of the infrastructure will be decided individually and in close dialogue with the involved scientist to ensure smooth operations for all involved parts
