Koltur Research Station, FO

The station is owned by SAVN – The Faroese National Heritage.

The research at the station focusses on the long-term monitoring of ecological changes, research on species interactions and active nature restoration measures.

The Koltur Research Station provides historical biodiversity records, climate data, and more recent soil temperature for VA. Recent biodiversity (birds, invertebrates, and plants) data may be available upon request.

Location

The station is on the Island of Koltur in the Tórshavn Municipality, Faroe Islands.

The station is located on a 2.5 km2 island which reaches 477m a.s.l. and has typical sheep-grazed grassy slopes, exposed rocky shores, sea-bird cliffs, and small streams, which are suitable for studies on ecology and biodiversity.

The island is under the auspices of the National Museum and is partly protected. It is situated 3.5 km from the island of Streymoy and the western side is exposed to the predominant south-westerly winds and waves.

Facilities

Koltur can accommodate up to four researchers at a time. Surrounding houses include a workshop, storage, large freezer, and large fridge.

Services offeredÂ

Accommodation (sleeping, kitchen, bathroom, etc.) is in the 70 m2 restored stone house Niðri í Húsi. Lab facilities are not part of the research station infrastructure but can be available upon request at the main museum facilities in the town of Tórshavn.

What is included in the Access

Unit of access: User/day

Modalities of access offered: In-person access, remote access

Users can join the local researchers when and where it is feasible. They will have access to assistance from technical staff and, if needed, from scientific staff. The typical duration of work is five days.
