The research station is owned by the Government of Greenland, and the Aarhus University in Denmark is responsible for operating the station.
The station is a unique platform for research, monitoring and education in high Arctic Northeast Greenland. Â

Location
The Zackenberg Research Station is located in Young Sund – TyrolerÂfjord complex in Northeast Greenland. The station is situated in the southern part of the National Park of North and East Greenland, the largest national park in the world (approximately 1 million km2). The nearest settlement is the military outpost Daneborg (with a marine research facility) 25 km southeast of the station. The nearest town is Ittoqqortoormiit, 450 km south of the station.
Facilities
The station has 25 beds, two laboratories, offices, dining and living rooms, a workshop, and a seminar room, a mess with cook, and satellite-based telephone, fax, and email service. An accommodation and laboratory facility is located next to the military outpost Daneborg. The latter accommodates 10 scientists.
Observatories linked to the station: The Zackenberg Station hosts, among other sites, the monitoring of both the GEM (www.g-e-m.dk) and ICOS (https://www.icos-cp.eu) distributed network observatories.
Services offered
ZAC provides access to a high Arctic pristine ecosystem with high flora, fauna, and landscape diversity. Monitoring on vegetation, arthropods, mammals, birds, freshwater lakes, glaciers, climate, and the marine environment has been carried out at ZAC since 1995. Â
What is included in the Access

Modalities of Access: in-person access, remote access
All costs related to using the facilities at Zackenberg and Daneborg as well as accommodation and full board are included. The station provides vhf-radios, weapons, and safety instructions. The typical duration of work is between 2 and 3 weeks. Proposals will be allocated station time and integrated in the general schedule.

Time frame for access preparations
The users should contact the station to discuss travel and logistic arrangements, as well as the required permits and licenses, as soon as possible after the access is granted.
Permits, licenses and training
If your research will include activities not complying with the National Park regulations, you are required to apply the Government of Greenland for additional permit(s)/dispensation well in advance. Additional permissions may be required, for example regarding research on mammals, minerals or genetic resources etc, see https://govgen.gl/?sc_lang=en for further information. For scientific permits, see also https://govmin.gl/.
It is the user’s own responsibility to ensure that all relevant permits are obtained prior to field work, but the Zackenberg secretariat at zackenberg[at]au.dk can be consulted for advice.
Medical guidelines
The Government of Greenland requires Search and Rescue (SAR) insurance from each project covering all persons involved. The SAR insurance must cover the amount of DKK 1,000,000, with the Danish State as the sole beneficiary if the project or expedition takes place inside the area covered by the Executive Order on remote travel. It is mandatory that you are properly insured before leaving for Zackenberg.
Personal information required from the users include allergies, food intolerances, medical issues etc.
